THE FACTS |
|

|
Every year, over 12,500 young people are diagnosed with cancer. One in every
330 children will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20.*
In Connecticut approximately 200 children and teenagers are diagnosed
annually.** Cancer does not discriminate against race, age or sex. It reaches
into every community in our state. When children and their parents are first
confronted with the reality of this diagnosis, their journey is just beginning.
Following the initial diagnosis, children endure a series of diagnostic and
treatment procedures, which can last for years. Their parents, in addition
to having to confront and cope with the reality of the disease and its effects
on their child, are faced with the multi-faceted complexities of coordinating
their child’s care. This coordination involves recurrent clinic visits and
hospital stays as well as the financial burden associated with those trips.
