OUR STORY

HANNAH’S GIFT was created in memory of 4 year-old Hannah Burns who underwent cancer treatment at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut. During treatment Hannah remained full of grace and hope. Our hope is that Hannah’s Gift can help children and families meet and overcome the everyday challenges associated with childhood cancer treatment.

Our directors have first hand experience with pediatric cancer either as parents of or as direct caregivers to children with cancer. We have witnessed and experienced the challenges that can easily overwhelm a family caring for a child with cancer. We also know the acts of kindness that have made differences in our lives as we struggled through treatment. We are dedicated to carrying out the mission of HANNAH’S GIFT and focusing on the financial and emotional needs of these special children and their families.

Hannah was born in May of 1997. She was an amazingly spirited child whose striking blue eyes drew you in at first glance. From an early age, she loved to sing and dance. She immersed herself in the joy and laughter that accompanied all of her interactions with those she loved and those who loved her.

In April of 2000, shortly before her 3rd birthday, Hannah was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare childhood cancer. Over the course of the next year, Hannah would endure multiple surgeries, intense chemotherapy, and radiation in an attempt to cure her cancer. During this time, she displayed incredible strength and perseverance. She never lost her ability to smile and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. She continued to enchant and amaze everyone she met along this difficult journey. In March of 2001, almost one year after her diagnosis, she completed her rigorous treatment protocol and tests revealed no signs of Cancer. However, in August of 2001 we learned that Hannah’s Cancer had returned. Sadly, this time there were no effective treatments that would offer the possibility of a cure. Hannah lost her courageous battle with Cancer in February of 2002.

Throughout her entire life, Hannah displayed the tremendous gift of finding an element of joy in every situation, no matter how difficult. Through Hannah’s Gift, we hope to preserve Hannah’s spirit by allowing other children and their families to enjoy life’s gifts by lessening the many difficulties encountered during cancer treatment.
